Most of the time, Windows takes care of updates in the background.
It downloads patches, security fixes, and feature updates automatically — often while you’re not even looking.
But sometimes, automatic updates don’t work as expected.
You might notice performance issues, bugs, or missing features, and wonder:
“Did I even get the latest update?”
Here’s how to check for updates yourself — quickly and safely.
1. Open the Windows Settings
Click the Start menu, then click the gear icon to open the Settings window.
Alternatively, you can press Windows + I on your keyboard.
Once the Settings window is open, move to the next step.
2. Go to “Update & Security”
In the Settings window, scroll down and select “Update & Security.”
This section controls Windows Update, backup, recovery, and troubleshooting.
You’ll land directly on the Windows Update tab by default.
3. Click “Check for updates”
At the top of the page, you’ll see a button labeled “Check for updates.”
Click it, and Windows will start scanning for the latest available patches.
If any updates are found, they’ll be listed — including cumulative updates, security updates, or driver enhancements.
4. Let it download and install
Once updates appear, Windows will automatically start downloading them.
You may need to restart your computer after the installation is complete.
It’s important not to turn off your device during this process.
5. Optional: View update history
Want to see what’s already been installed?
On the same page, click “View update history.”
This shows a complete log of installed updates, including dates and types (e.g., Quality, Feature, Driver).
It’s helpful for troubleshooting or just keeping track of changes.
