How to Tell If Your Email Address Has Been Leaked or Hacked

You’ve received a strange email…
Or your inbox is suddenly full of spam.

It might mean your email was part of a data breach.

Here’s how to check — and what to do if it was.

✅ 1. Use breach check tools

Go to https://haveibeenpwned.com

  • Enter your email

  • See if it was exposed in known breaches (LinkedIn, Adobe, Dropbox, etc.)

  • Shows when and where the breach happened

✅ Also check Firefox Monitor

✅ 2. Signs your email is compromised

  • Password reset emails you didn’t request

  • Login alerts from strange locations

  • People saying you sent them spam

  • Subscriptions to sites you never joined

  • Inbox full of phishing emails

✅ 3. If it’s been leaked, do this:

  • Immediately change your password

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

  • Check login activity on connected services

  • Remove or unlink unused third-party apps

  • Use a password manager to create new, strong passwords

✅ 4. Check if your password was leaked too

Sites like DeHashed, LeakCheck, or Have I Been Pwned show if your passwords were in leaked dumps.

✅ If your password shows up anywhere = stop using it, everywhere.

✅ 5. Avoid future leaks

  • Never reuse passwords

  • Use alias/disposable emails on risky sites

  • Monitor your email regularly with breach tools

  • Avoid signing up via Facebook or Google on every site

Key points to remember

  • Check your email for leaks at HaveIBeenPwned.com

  • If exposed: change passwords + enable 2FA

  • Don’t ignore strange activity — investigate fast

  • Prevention = strong passwords + disposable emails

  • A leaked email is annoying — but fixable if you act quickly
