Sharing files at home or at work?
It’s easy — but doing it securely is what matters most.
Here’s how to safely share your downloaded files on a local network.
✅ 1. Share only specific folders
-
Never share your entire drive (like
C:\
) -
Create a dedicated “Shared Downloads” folder
-
Share only that
✅ Limits exposure if something goes wrong.
✅ 2. Set password protection
-
Right-click folder → Properties → Sharing → Advanced Sharing → Permissions
-
Set specific users and passwords
✅ No anonymous access to your files.
✅ 3. Use private network settings
-
Windows Settings → Network & Internet → Status → Network Properties
-
Set network to Private, not Public
✅ Private mode enables secure file sharing.
✅ 4. Monitor connections
Use Computer Management → Shared Folders → Sessions
to:
-
See who is connected
-
Disconnect suspicious sessions manually
✅ Regular checks = maximum security.
✅ 5. Use encrypted file transfer when possible
If sharing outside your local network:
-
Use FTP with TLS
-
Or simple HTTPS servers
✅ Protects files from interception.
Key points to remember
-
Share only necessary folders

Always enable password protection
