How to Prevent Malicious Extensions from Installing During Software Setups

You installed a free program —
and suddenly your browser homepage has changed, ads pop up everywhere.

Here’s how to stop malicious extensions from sneaking in during setup.

✅ 1. Never use “Express” or “Default” install

Always choose:

  • Custom or Advanced install

  • Deselect all extra components

✅ “Express” = permission to install toolbars, browser hijackers, fake extensions.

✅ 2. Read every checkbox and step

Watch out for:

  • “Recommended browser addon”

  • “Enhance your search experience”

  • “Install WebNavigator”

✅ Deselect everything not essential to the main software.

✅ 3. Watch browser settings after install

Check:

  • Default search engine

  • Homepage

  • Extension list

✅ Malicious installs often change these silently.

✅ 4. Remove unwanted extensions immediately

In Chrome:

  • Menu → Extensions

  • Remove suspicious add-ons

In Firefox:

  • Add-ons → Manage Extensions

✅ Look for unknown names or anything added recently.

✅ 5. Use Revo Uninstaller or Unchecky (optional)

  • Revo: Deep cleans bundled installs

  • Unchecky: Auto-unchecks extra offers during setup

✅ Extra defense layer for frequent installers.

Key points to remember

  • Avoid “Express” installs — they’re traps

  • Always review extension offers during setup

  • Monitor your browser after installing new software

  • Remove anything unfamiliar or unneeded

  • Use helper tools for extra protection
